最先，是因為想知道西班牙文的 comenzar 和 empezar 的方別，網上找到些答案，有人提到它們就像是英語中的 begin 和 start。對了，begin 和 start 這兩個字有甚麼分別呢?
問C先生，他也說不出來。於是我再上網找找看，大部份人都說這兩個字是完全可以混著用的，但我覺得以下這個解釋寫得最好:
Michael Swan (Practical English Usage, 2nd ed., Oxford University Press, 1995) 提到雖然大部份時間這兩字都可互相取代，但以下三種情況卻只能用 start 不能用 begin:
1) 開始一個旅程 (start a journey): I think we ought to start at six, while the roads are empty.
2) 機器開始運作 (machines start working): The car won’t start.
3) 啟動機器 (make a machine work): How do you start the washing machine?
